Together with a big website revamp, Southeast Asia’s first and biggest furry news channel Global Furry Television (GFTV) launched the Community Initiative and Outreach (CIO) Programme Sunday (June 12).

The CIO confirms GFTV’s intention to engage with the furry community and the general public more, by holding events and meetups of its own, or simply using its resources to assist in furry meetups.

The Singaporean furry news channel hopes the CIO can bring furries closer together especially in a time of social volatility and division.

Major successes met

Debuted at this year’s Little Island Furcon (LIFC) were GFTV CE. usher cards and the Hello Spot.

In its iconic bold lettering and bright colours, the CE. usher cards help to guide attendees to a designated location.

Depending on requirements, multiple usher cards may be deployed.

Here, LIFC 2023’s venue is rather a long walk away. Many attendees thus found themselves lost along the way, including a mother and daughter pair.

With the usher cards, GFTV’s on-site Core Coverage Support (CCS) team successfully led them to where the furcon is.

At furcons, there are big open spaces for social interaction.

But while furry fandom may be constantly portrayed as a socially friendly space, not everyone is brave enough to approach a stranger to say hello.

Do attendees entering a socialisation-heavy space for their first time have a safe space to say hello without getting stranger stares?

The Hello Spot makes any space an open space where anyone can join the group, say hello and meet new people.

At LIFC, it successfully brought first-time furries and furcon attendees together and from there, facilitated ad-hoc activities like meals.

All of these achievements culminated in a rather emotional moment captured in front of the sunset on Day 1 (June 10).

Surrounding the Hello Spot and usher cards were a group of 14 first-time attendees to LIFC 2023, including GFTV’s Core Coverage Support Team for LIFC 2023.

The Hello Spot was once again employed at a big meetup hosted by SGFurs (June 17), and it continued what it did best.

Sitting around it were new furries from LIFC 2023 hanging out with other furries from the local community.

At an open rooftop space in VivoCity, furries sat around having dinner together.

More face-to-face engagement

GFTV Community Events (stylised as CE.) is the name of all furmeets and furcons held by GFTV.

It will start off as small furmeets with various activities planned, from going to the cinema to cycling at a park.

CE. events will be given space to grow and develop in size – perhaps Singapore may soon see a second furcon alongside Little Island Furcon!

Oh also, on June 24, 2023, those new friends that the Hello Spot caught at LIFC 2023 attended GFTV’s first-ever CE. furmeet at an arcade. 10 people attended it.

CE. furmeets are planned to be held once per week, or at least twice, best thrice per month, all covering the gaps between major fandom events in Singapore.

With this frequency, it aims to give furries more chances to make more meaningful friendships in-person.

Consolidating initiatives under the CIO

With such achievements in just a single month, the Hello Spot and CE. usher signs have proven its strong potential at furry meetups.

Thus, to put its benefits into common practice, GFTV began the CIO.

From here on, it will officiate the Singaporean furry news channel’s continuous intention to engage and bond the furry community more and improve the public understanding of furries.
