GFTV sits down with Holzdrache of Holy Beast Festival (HBF) 2024 to discuss the highs and lows of launching a new furry convention in Chongqing.

Fudi (interviewer): What did organizers do to prepare for HBF 2024?

Holzdrache (interviewee): We had high hopes for this event and knew we needed strong support from our staff and organizers. For pre-event preparations, we focused on accessibility for attendees carrying bags. The hotel venue needed to be spacious, especially the lobby, for fursuiting and photos, which is why we chose a hotel with a very large lobby.

The main events hall was at least 1,300 square meters to accommodate multiple activities and allow fursuiters to move with ease. We also set aside space for a dealers’ den to cater to non-fursuiters and planned special activities for fursuiters.

Fudi: Why is HBF 2024 held at the Chongqing Daijiang Garden Hotel?

Holzdrache: This hotel is well-positioned in Chongqing. It’s located centrally among three transport nodes: two high-speed rail stations and the airport to the north, providing very convenient access for visitors. The hotel also facilitated a speedy check-in process and was very cooperative, readily providing assistance whenever we needed it.

Fudi: Should furcons interact with the general public or just furries?

Holzdrache: As subcultures develop, there’s no single answer. Some believe the furry community provides emotional value and support in their daily lives. Others feel it’s an opportunity for self-expression, as societal acceptance of furries has increased.

Some people may still be hesitant to interact, preferring to stay within their own circles. China’s society is generally inclusive, but these individual differences exist.

Fudi: How many attendees were there; was manpower sufficient?

Holzdrache: We were stunned by the high attendee count, which was quite good for our first event. We had around 300 fursuiters and approximately 700 attendees in total.

Regarding manpower, we experienced some hiccups that caused issues during pre-event preparations and with hotel matters. This is something we need to reflect on. However, the hotel was consistently supportive and offered assistance whenever we needed it.

Fudi: Are there any feedback you would greatly consider for the next HBF?

Holzdrache: We received a lot of feedback. One key area is improving staff communication and coordination, as insufficient communication led to some delays in preparing the main events hall.

Another issue was some attendees going to the wrong hotel, likely due to details not being fully settled between us and the hotel. We will also focus on better connecting with the artists who dedicate a lot of energy to the event.

For the next HBF, we will prioritize staff coordination, communication with the hotel, and on-site security.

Fudi: Was the event budget sufficient for HBF 2024?

Holzdrache: We didn’t have any major financial problems. However, as this was our first furcon, we exceeded our budget and made a loss. This isn’t a major concern. We organize HBF for people to have fun and will continue to work towards its success. It’s an act of service and a platform for the furry community to experience Chongqing.

Fudi: Could you share with us details on the next HBF?

Holzdrache: We don’t have concrete plans for this year, of course. We can’t reveal all the details yet, but we’re considering making it a biannual event. If we prioritize quality, it might be an annual event. Quality is our priority.

We haven’t confirmed the next venue yet. Chongqing is a good location with high attendee engagement, and we strive to ensure their satisfaction. However, Chongqing’s terrain can be tiring for tourists. We’ll consider whether to hold the next event here or elsewhere. More details will be released in the future.

圣兽祭：来自重庆的首届毛兽盛会 – 墨榆专访

福迪: 为了办好这一次别具一格的兽展，主办方在前期做了哪些重要准备呢？

墨榆: 我们对于这次兽聚抱有很大的期望。我们觉得办好一场成功的兽聚，少不了主办方和所有 staff 的支持。对于前期准备，选址必须交通便利，因为大家出门确实是大包小包拎着走。

酒店配置方面，至少第一天的活动上，大家会在大厅出出毛，玩一玩拍拍照，所以会场要提供很大的空间。我们这次的大厅其实蛮大的。

在会场方面，因为考虑到了几个活动性的问题，我们的会场至少有一千三百平以上，所以出毛这个问题就不是很大。活动上，因为有不带毛和带毛装的两类人，我们会一部分做一个现场的摊位活动，提供给非毛装游客一个蛮好的体验。

对于毛装游客，我们有专门做了其他一些类型的活动。大概就是这样。

福迪: 这一次兽聚选择在重庆岱江花园饭店举办，为什么选择这样一家酒店？这家酒店有怎样的优势呢？

墨榆: 这家酒店对于在重庆这个山城来说，它的位置算是比较好的了。对于三个站，比如说两个高铁站和一个江北机场，酒店处于这三个站的中心位置，游客下车之后确实会有一个非常便利的交通条件。游客来酒店之后办理入住也是蛮快的。酒店的合作诚意度还是蛮高的，我们有什么需要，他们确实都会提供的。

福迪: 在当今福瑞文化知晓度越来越高的背景下，互联网为人们带去了大量新鲜事物，在您看来，兽聚应该多与路人市民互动，还是应该减少与陌生人的接触呢？

墨榆: 在当代亚文化的发展之下，我觉得每个人的想法都是不一样的。有些人会觉得，我们生活在这个圈子里面，并不是说以这个圈子为主，在我们生活中觉得很累的时候，他们可以给我们提供一些情绪价值。

有些人可能会想着说是，我们可以让路人去看到我们，去展现自己，因为这个圈子确实不像之前说的是上街会被人说。当然也会有一部分路人他们不会接受这样的东西，毕竟在中国这么一个包容的社会，存在这样的问题。

有些人确实是个人比较社恐，他们会觉得说，我不敢去和，甚至说我不敢去和毛毛交流，去跟人交流，他们会觉得这样的交流会是一种负担。

福迪: 重庆戴江花园饭店这次给到的兽聚会场真的非常的大，能够容纳不少的毛毛，也给毛毛们更多的活动空间。这一次兽聚一共有多少名参与者？staff 配置和酒店人手是否够用？

墨榆: 我们对这次人数虽然说是不敢有太大的期待，但是确实这次来的人数是大放异彩的，我们感觉到非常的震惊。第一次的话，我觉得这个人数还算蛮好的。我们毛装的装扮者只有三百来位，游客也大概有七百人左右这样子。

然后对于我们的 staff 安排的话，staff 主要是我们这边有一点小失误，导致他们在前期发物料以及酒店分配上可能会出现一点小问题，这个是值得我们反思的。但是最后对于酒店的态度来说，他们从始至终都是说我们有需求他们去提供帮助，尽到力所能及的作用。

福迪: 这次兽聚之后我们也看到了有大量的反馈到了我们主办方，从众多反馈中您看到最值得重视的在下一次兽聚会着重改进的问题有哪些呢？

墨榆: 我们这边确实是收到了蛮多的反馈。

首先是在对于我们的前期的一个物料领取以及核销的问题，是由于 staff 这边我们没有一个全面的沟通，有可能是有些人处于一个比较懵的状态，他们在干活的时候可能是有一点懈怠了，导致我们会场的前期的开展工作有点慢，这就导致我们会场的前期准备太慢了。

酒店的配合还是蛮好的，但是可能是酒店与我们的对接还是有点没有对齐颗粒度吧，有一些参会者的酒店是入住错了，最后还是更换过来了。

因为是我们也是第一次办，其实我们觉得第一次是蛮重要的。我们确实是会尽心尽力的去搞画师啊，这些其实也都算了，非常的用了自己大量的良心血。他们甚至说自己工作回来之后呢，也就是加班加点的给我们搞这些工作，我们也非常的感谢。

我们确实是要在下一届中注重和 staff 客流对齐的问题，以及和酒店沟通的问题，这些东西以及会在会场上的一个人员保护的制度，我还是需要再着重注意一下。

福迪: 墨榆，这一次兽聚的预算是否充足呢？有没有遇上一些资金上的问题啊？

墨榆: 资金的问题是没有的。但是确实对于这次第一次办聚嘛，我们对于这种种种花销的话，可能会说是有一点超标，最终导致我们这边确实是有那么部分亏损，但是其实并没有什么大碍。

我觉得办兽聚，其实来的人玩开心啊，我们这边忙的时候井井有条就可以了。这个东西本来就是给我们圈内的毛毛提供一个服务，或者说是提供一个平台，让大家来到这个地方想就是去看到重庆这个山城原本的样貌，或者说是可以去体验到本质一个景点的快乐啊。

福迪: 总的来看，这一次圣兽祭的举办是较为成功的，得到了很多游客的满意。下一次的圣兽祭有计划了吗？有没有想过在哪里办？有没有一些可以透露的（细节）？

墨榆: 这个嘛，今年肯定是没有啦对吧。但是一些细节的话还是不能说的哦，但是大概就是半年一聚吧。如果说为了追求质量的话，我们可能会考虑一年一聚，就说毕竟是质量优先，不能说是把这个活动质量降下来一劳永逸这样子。

地方其实是不确定的，因为你说重庆这个地方蛮好的，特别好，游客呢其实参与度也很高，我们也尽力的去做到了一个满意度。但是重庆这个地方弯弯绕绕的，其实游客们来都蛮累的。我们会着重的去考虑一下，到底是在这里或是换地方（举办活动），这个后续将又再上映。
